Quaker Sampler: A Secret Sky

by Jacob de Graaf

What is it about Quaker samplers that fascinates us? Whether it’s the simple geometry of the medallions, the random scattering of the designs, or the natural elements found on nearly all old Quaker embroideries - this sampler has plenty to offer! Taking inspiration from 18th and 19th century samplers, there’s over 60 original designs, and no less than 4 period alphabets and numbers from the mid 1800s that you can use (in conjunction with the empty grid paper) to personalise your work.
My very good friend Caroline Lavelle (www.carolinelavelle.com) mentioned a beautiful quote by the 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi. The quote seemed to go so well with Quaker aesthetics and their philosophy of love, peace, and tollerance, that I decided to incorporate it on this sampler. “Secret Sky” is also the name of a project Caroline is currently involved in, so make sure to keep an eye and ear out for that also!
Finally, I would like to thank you for purchasing this pattern. Your support means that I can create more patterns in the future. If you would like to receive updates on Modern Folk, please make sure to sign up to my free newsletter, at my website: www.modernfolkembroidery.com.
