Il Fazzoletto Ricamato

by Jacob de Graaf

Over the years I´ve built up an ever-growing collection of antique samplers. A while ago this sampler from 1875 was added to it. And without hesitation I can say that it is the most perfectly, refined sampler in my collection. It was stitched by Teresa Rosciella, who was born in Bitone, Bari-Puglia, in 1856. We do indeed find the initials TR on the sampler. The original is stitched on a very small piece of fabric with a very high thread count (approximately 82 threads per inch). It is as small as a handkerchief, that´s why we call it a handkerchief embroidery. See the monochrome version as well.
